This guide follows Aura’s current open-source import flow. Read the safety notes before entering a recovery phrase or private key.
Your recovery phrase controls your bitcoin.
Enter it only inside the official Aura app on a device you trust. Aura support will never ask for it. Never paste it into this website, an email, a support chat, a form, or a screenshot.
Before you begin
What the import screen accepts
A single Bitcoin private key encoded as compressed Wallet Import Format. Treat it with the same care as a recovery phrase.
Aura’s mnemonic scanner checks the first Bitcoin account across Legacy (BIP44), Nested SegWit (BIP49), and Native SegWit (BIP84), following both receiving and change branches with a gap limit of 20.
Passphrase users
A BIP39 passphrase is not a PIN. Every passphrase can derive a different, valid wallet. A missing character, space, or capitalization change can open an empty wallet instead of showing an error.
Step by step

Open the official app
Install Aura from its official App Store listing, open it, and tap Get Started.

Choose a wallet name
On the Add Wallet screen, enter an optional name so you can identify the wallet later, then tap Import wallet.

Check the import options
Open the three-dot menu. Enable Passphrase only if the original wallet used a BIP39 passphrase. Keep Wipe clipboard after importing enabled if you plan to paste.

Enter the recovery secret
Type or paste the complete BIP39 phrase, or enter a compressed mainnet WIF. You may use the QR scanner instead. Keep mnemonic words in their original order and language.

Tap Import
Aura validates the phrase checksum or WIF format first. If Passphrase is enabled, enter the exact original passphrase in the secure prompt.

Let Aura discover activity
Aura derives supported address types on the device and queries the configured Electrum connection for wallet history and unspent outputs. The process can take longer when a wallet has extensive history.

Verify before receiving or spending
Compare at least one known receiving address or a known transaction with the original wallet. If the wallet appears empty, stop and re-check the phrase, passphrase, original address type, and account number before sending funds.
Troubleshooting
If the expected balance does not appear
- Confirm every mnemonic word and its order; do not translate the phrase.
- Confirm whether the original wallet used an optional BIP39 passphrase and reproduce it exactly.
- Confirm the source wallet used a path Aura currently scans: BIP44, BIP49, or BIP84, on Bitcoin mainnet account 0.
- If the original wallet used another account index or a different derivation scheme, do not send funds until compatibility is confirmed.
- Do not test recovery by sharing the phrase with support. Contact support@aurawallet.org using public details only, such as the source wallet name and address type.
